SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW – ALAN MACDONALD

Q1. Provide a short bio about yourself

Hiya. My name is Alan, but my friends call me Dougz. Got my first guitar when I was 10 and have been gigging for the last 20 years. I sing and play for the function band, The Desperados and also play in a band called Toy Tin Soldier with Connect’s Joe Gallacher and Paul Crawford.

Q2. People would be surprised to know what about you

I still get stage fright!

Q3. Favourite place to gig?

I lived in Germany for a while when I was younger. In the east of Germany, next to the Polish border, there is a town called Bad Muskau and they have a venue called Turmvilla. The staff and punters in Turmvilla were always very welcoming. Their catering was fantastic as well! I must have played there about ten times and I don’t think I ever woke up the following day without a wee hangover! I made some friends for life in Bad Muskau and every time I played there it felt like being home.

Q4. Biggest music influence?

Dire Straits made me pick up a guitar. Oasis kept me playing. Recently, I have been listening to a lot of Lenny Kravitz and Prince. My biggest influences, however, come from all the other musicians I play with.

Q5. Favorite current song?

I took my wife to see Justin Timberlake last year. His live show was superb. He must have had at least a twenty-piece band on stage! I quite like his song, ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’.

Q6. Favourite heckle at gigs?

Thankfully, most people have been very polite and kept their thoughts to themselves. I did have a punter enthusiastically shout “SING, ya bastart!”over and over...while I was singing. He was a big friendly guy and was very complimentary; he just had a strange way of giving me some encouragement.

Q7. One item you would couldn’t live without?

My iPad. I use it to record, it has all the lyrics stored for the songs I cover and it has my gig diary on it.

Q8. Song you are requested to play the most?

Hmmm, there are a few. ‘Fast Car’ and ‘Wish You Were Here’ are contenders for the number one spot.
At a wedding one night, a lady kept coming up, asking us to play ‘Jealousy’. I had no idea what the song was and asked the lady if she knew who it was written by. She didn’t know, but insisted that it’s a new song and everyone would dance if we played it. She told me she would come back when she found out who performs it. A few moments later, she came back to tell me that the song was by The Killers. I told her, that I had never heard the song before, but would happily play another Killers song. We dedicated ‘Mr Brightside to the lady, who excitedly came to the front of the stage to tell us, “That’s Jealousy! That’s the song!”
