SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW – AUSTIN BROWN

Q1. Provide a short bio about yourself
Well, I was born in Glasgow on the 12th of February 1985, along with my twin sister Pamela. That would also have been about the time I fell in love with music. I've sang from the moment I realised I had a voice and I picked a bass up for the first time when I was 11. The development of my playing on both bass and guitar was quite organic, as was my singing. That is to say there was very little planning or formal tuition. I loved music, wanted to be in a band, wanted to play, and I seemed to naturally gravitate towards people who were the same. At 15 I was resident bass player at the jam session in Cumbernauld. This gave me the experience of playing on my toes that has served me so well. Since then I've fell in and out bands - covers and originals, singing and playing. Had a blast and met some beautiful people. Today, I probably have the best balance I've ever had. I do my solo acoustic gigs, where I get to use my voice and express my softer, more soulful side. Then I get to indulge my love for the bass and playing with a full band in Transit Jukebox. So I'm pretty happy.

Q2. People would be surprised to know what about you
I am a huge Columbo fan. Despite owning every episode, I find it difficult to turn the channel if it comes on the telly.

Q3. Favourite place to gig?
At the moment it's the Ardlui Hotel out at Loch Lomand. Just such a beautiful place, plus the owners are brand new and I get a bed for the night!

Q4. Biggest music influence?
I always find this quite difficult to answer cause I'm never really aware of what is influencing me. I've listened to early AC/DC since I was knee high to a grasshopper and Bon Scott is still my hero. So early AC/DC. In terms of influencing my decision to go acoustic, it would have to be Neil Young.

Q5. Favorite current song?
Photograph - Ed Sheeran

Q6. Favourite heckle at gigs?
Occasionally my uncle will show up to a gig and shout for Morrissey after every song, cause he knows how much I hate him. That's pretty funny.

Q7. One item you would couldn’t live without?
*High Horse Moment* None, it's just stuff.

Q8. Song you are requested to play the most?
Oddly enough it's Galway Girl by Steve Earl.
